Pope Francis has died at the age of 88 after a bout of illness. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, he was elected in 2013, the first non-European pope to lead the Catholic Church in centuries. Under his papacy, the Vatican has adopted a realist approach to foreign affairs to mediate international conflicts.
